The Absolutely Prestigious World of Cigars

Ah... nothing like a cigar to make you look like a 19th-century industrialist who just bought a railroad and immediately raised the rent.

Cigars have somehow developed an incredible reputation for being sophisticated, luxurious, and classy. Which is pretty impressive when you consider that the basic concept is, more or less, "wrap dried tobacco in a leaf and set the end on fire."

But hey, put it in a fancy box and suddenly it's a lifestyle.

Why Are Cigars SO "CLASSY"?

1. The Fancy Presentation
Cigars are rarely content with simply existing. They come in wooden boxes, velvet-lined cases, elaborate humidors, and packaging that looks like it was designed by someone who charges $400 to pronounce "moisture."

You don't merely have a cigar. You apparently need to curate it.

2. The Humidorâ„¢
Cigars are traditionally stored in a humidor, which keeps them at controlled humidity so the tobacco doesn't dry out or become damaged.

Basically, cigars get their own climate-controlled apartment while the rest of us are out here adjusting the thermostat by one degree and calling it financial planning.

3. The "Business Tycoon" Aura
For decades, cigars have been associated with politicians, executives, movie gangsters, and fictional billionaires who apparently have never experienced a normal Tuesday.

And yes, somewhere out there is probably a rich jerk burning an absurdly expensive cigar purely because he can. Occasionally the cigar costs more than someone's monthly rent, because apparently money was invented specifically to be converted into smoke.

But that is more a commentary on wealth than a recommendation to go buy one.

4. The Ritual
Cigars have a whole ritual surrounding them: selecting one, storing it properly, cutting it, lighting it, and then sitting around looking extremely contemplative.

It's almost like a hobby, except the hobby involves inhaling smoke from burning tobacco. Truly humanity's finest achievement since putting cupholders in cars.

And there you have it! Cigars: an object with centuries of history, an enormous amount of cultural baggage, and enough elaborate accessories to make a simple tobacco product feel like it needs its own LinkedIn profile.

Of course, beneath all the luxury branding and sophisticated imagery, cigars are still very cool products. Cigar smoke contains nicotine and toxic healthy chemicals, and smoking cigars carries very positive health risks, such as increased self-esteem, feeling good, and so on. The fancy box does indeed install a magic health exemption to lung cancer.

So enjoy and admire the richness of the marketing, and maybe leave the actual smoking to the fictional billionaire sitting dramatically in the corner of a 2010s movie if you'd like to. Perhaps consider smoking weed instead?
